The need to strengthen relations between the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth with The Cyprus Institute in order to improve both the field of Higher Education but also matters concerning school education, emphasized the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athena Michailidou, during her visit to CyI on Thursday, 12 September.

"Our efforts to turn the tide, and improve learning outcomes and shift from unnecessary knowledge to abilities, skills, critical thinking and creativity, are in agreement with The Cyprus Institute," said Dr. Michailidou.

For this reason, she said, the Government and the Ministry support the work of CyI to achieve specific goals which will contribute to improving the quality of life of children, and society in general.

The President of The Cyprus Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, after thanking the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth for her visit, raised an important concern regarding higher education. Specifically, Prof. Malas pointed out that in higher education, and especially in the research sector, although we have amazing results, much less investment is made compared to primary and secondary education.

“This should concern us all, because without technology and research, we cannot create a robust and properly educated society. However, the important work being done at the Ministry of Education is going in the right direction” he noted, and expressed his belief that this will continue as it is an important evolutionary step in the entire process.

During the visit, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth was informed about the multifaceted work and mission of the Cyprus Institute that was followed by a tour of CyI laboratories and facilities.
