CyI’s ARTES and TIER-1 Teams Present their Work at Cyprus Seeds “Innovation Showcase” Event

Ten teams that successfully completed the second round of funding of Cyprus Seeds participated in the event

Cyprus Seeds, the non-profit organization that supports the commercialization of academic research in Cyprus, organized an Innovation Showcase to celebrate the successful completion of its second funding cycle. The event took place on June 1, 2022, at 18:00, at the Costas Stefanis Amphitheater of The Cyprus Institute. This is the second time the showcase event – the culmination of the Cyprus Seeds funding cycle – is hosted at CyI. The aim of the event was to give the Cyprus Seeds teams the opportunity to present their work to the public and to potential investors from Greece, the United Kingdom, France, Cyprus and the USA. The event was addressed by CyI President Prof. Costas Papanicolas.

The ten teams of the second cycle are active in a wide range of sectors and come from leading universities, research centers and centers of excellence in Cyprus. Specifically three teams are from the Cyprus University of Technology, two teams from The Cyprus Institute, two teams from the CYENS Center of Excellence, one team from the University of Cyprus, and one team from the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia.

During the event, 5 successful entrepreneurs and innovation experts from the USA who, for 2 years, have been mentoring the Cyprus Seeds teams, took part in a panel discussion on ‘The key success factors for start-ups’. The discussion was attended by Jonathan Green, co-founder of Arcadia Funds, Paul Blackborow, co-founder of Energetiq Technology, George Mabry, mentor and investor in business ventures from Harvard, MIT and Boston universities, and Karen Golmer, who has many years of experience in the commercialization of academic research as a former director of MIT's Deshpande Technology Innovation Center. The discussion was moderated by Leon Sandler, General Manager of MIT's Deshpande Technology Innovation Center.

The event concluded with 5-minute presentations from each of the 10 teams that successfully completed the second round of funding of Cyprus Seeds. The two CyI teams participating were:

TIER – 1, Tomographic Image Enhanced Reconstruction, which employs the latest cyberinfrastructure and computational techniques to provide tomographic medical images of unmatched quality, thus enhancing the detection and monitoring capability of malignant tumors of cardiac and neurological diseases. Team members include CyI Institute Professor, Costas N. Papanicolas, Associate Professor of Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Eftathios Stiliaris, Professor and Director, Institute of Isotopic Studies S.A. and Head of Dept. of Nuclear Medicine Unit of Medical Center, Athens, Demetris Maintas, Charalambos Chrysostomou, associate Research Scientist at CyI and Asst. Vice President of Strategy and Development at CyI, Konstantinos Kleovoulou, who presented the project at the event.

ARTES, offers an integrated pipeline of services for art characterization and a linked unique digital object that certifies and valorizes the materiality, artistic technique, and preservation conditions of works of art and heritage assets. ARTES builds on years of interdisciplinary research work at CyI's APAC Labs in collaboration with leading international and local institutions and stakeholders. Team members include Associate Professor Sorin Hermon, Associate Professor Nikolas Bakirtzis, Graduate Research Assistant/PhD Student Valentina Vassallo, and Graduate Research Assistant/PhD Student Athanasios Koutoupas, who presented the project at the event.
