Chase is an MSCA Doctoral Fellow researching as part of the PlaCe-International Training Network. His project is entitled ‘Raw materials in the production of ancient Cypriot ceramics. Sampling the Cypriot geo-environment’. Chase received his BA (Honours) in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of St Andrews in 2015. He received his first Masters in Archaeology at the University of Cambridge in 2016. For his second, he received a Master of Science in Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture at University College Dublin, during which he was awarded the Ruadhrí de Valéra Memorial Prize.

One of Chase’s primary research interests is the use of experimental archaeology to better understand ceramic technology. Chase has been a potter for three years, training with potters in California, Ireland, and Crete. In his second masters he used this skill of wheel-making pottery to conduct an archaeological experiment aimed at understanding the introduction of the wheel to Crete in the Middle Bronze Age. Following this he co-organized an international conference entitled, Archaeological Approaches to the Study of the Potter’s Wheel.

While working in the construction industry in America, Chase developed a knowledge of soil mechanics, having spent three years both observing earthworks in the field as well as performing scientific analyses in a laboratory. He will apply this knowledge in his PhD in order to contribute more to the study of raw materials in the production of Bronze Age Cypriot ceramics.
