The Cyprus Institute & Department of Meteorology Launch New Website With Detailed Weather Information
The new website presents a state-of-the-art weather forecast for five days. It is produced with a high-resolution meteorological model that is much more detailed than other systems in use for Cyprus and the area. The weather information includes temperature, rain, wind and visibility for municipalities, districts and the larger region. It monitors real-time weather at 13 locations in Cyprus, shows satellite observations, and serves the different communities in English, Greek and Turkish. When needed, the website will provide warnings for weather extremes such as storms and heavy rains, heat waves and fogs. The information is easily accessible by PC, tablet and smartphone. The public is invited to submit suggestions to further improve the information and tailor the forecasts to the needs of the different sectors in Cyprus.
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and education institution with a scientific and technological orientation. It addresses science, technology, innovation and related policy issues to help resolve major challenges in energy, environment, climate and water availability in Cyprus and the region.
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is mainly responsible for matters related to the weather and climate of Cyprus. The Department provides services and information relevant to the weather and climate aiming the wellbeing of the people of Cyprus and the protection of their life and property.
Computational resources and support for the weather forecasts are provided by the Cy-Tera supercomputer, a national infrastructure hosted at CyI, which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research Promotion Foundation.
