OptiStore: Optimal Energy Storage Deployment and Renewables Integration for Active Energy Consumers in Cyprus

optistore logoGiven the numerous challenges confronting the Cypriot electricity system — ranging from the rapid surge in photovoltaics adoption to the imminent integration of new conventional generation units and the prospective electrical interconnection of the island — a pressing demand emerges for more sophisticated systems. These systems must facilitate precise predictions concerning production, energy source availability, weather conditions, and consumption.

OptiStore will team up the Cyprus Institute with Petrolina Electric (PEL), a Cypriot electricity provider in order to expand the Energy Management System (EMS) that it uses with its existing clientele to include energy storage technologies that will assist its customers to optimise the deployment of their assets. CyI and PEL aim to optimise their operations to maximize gains for both. OptiStore will utilise the RES resources at the PROTEAS facility (PV, wind, solar dishes, Rankine-cycle electricity generation) and storage (in batteries and molten salts) to simulate and test the EMS algorithms before deployment. CyI will perform extensive modelling and testing of the various subsystems and will forge an effective partnership between a research organisation and a commercial entity.
