CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas, participated in a panel discussion titled “Research, Innovation, and Centers of Excellence: The Critical Contribution of Academics to the Successful Implementation of ESG” at the 16th Conference on Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility (CSR). The discussion focused on the pivotal role of academic institutions in fostering new leaders in sustainability and bridging the gap between academia and the job market.
 
The panel discussion provided a platform for distinguished academics and industry leaders to delve into the significant contributions of research and innovation in the effective implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. The dialogue underscored the necessity for academic institutions to actively participate in shaping sustainability-focused leaders who can meet the evolving demands of the global market. It highlighted the indispensable role of academic institutions in preparing future leaders equipped to drive sustainability initiatives in the corporate world.
 
Panelists included CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas, Assoc. Prof. at Business School, Executive Chairman, Center for Business Sustainability and Responsibility, University of Nicosia, Dr. Alexandros Antonaras, Professor of Strategy at the University of Cyprus, Dr. George Kassinis, Professor of Marketing and Business Administration, School of Economic Sciences and Administration, Open University of Cyprus, Dr. Konstantinos Leonidou, Asst. Prof. at the Cyprus University of Technology, Department of Shipping, Dr. Olympia Nisiforou. Moderator of the discussion was Ioanna Panayiotou, Executive Director, University of Limassol.
 
The 16th Conference on Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility is the most comprehensive annual gathering for businesses and executives dedicated to CSR and long-term corporate sustainability in Cyprus. The conference aimed to highlight best practices in corporate sustainability and CSR from both Cypriot and international companies, illustrating how responsible business practices enhance long-term attractiveness and sustainability.
 
The Conference scrutinized the latest global trends in corporate sustainability and responsibility, with a particular focus on the CSRD directive, ESG criteria, and ESRS standards. It provided invaluable insights and fostered meaningful discussions on the integration of ESG principles into business strategies. Participants discussed the increasing sensitivity of consumers and investors towards environmental protection, societal issues, and good governance, stressing that companies must adapt quickly and effectively to maintain their sustainability. The event also presented international and domestic case studies from various economic sectors, showcasing companies that have successfully implemented innovative policies and practices in line with ESG principles.
 
The event attracted a diverse group of attendees, including executives in corporate sustainability and responsibility, CSR, ESG unit managers, and directors and executives from marketing, communication, and public relations. Participants also included professionals from advertising agencies, communication and public relations service providers, consulting service providers, NGOs, employer organizations, and chambers of commerce, all sharing a common interest in sustainable development.
 

The event successfully bridged the gap between academia and industry, paving the way for innovative approaches to sustainable development.
