Abstract

This class introduces the use of isotopic methods to investigate human and animal mobility and landscape use in archaeology, with a focus on strontium isotopes. This class includes theoretical basis of isotopic provenancing, sampling strategies, and data interpretation, as well as the challenges and limitations of the approach.
A large section will be dedicated to the study of cremated bone and the challenges they pose when using isotope analyses.
Finally, the course includes an overview of how strontium baselines are created, and discusses case studies from different archaeological contexts.

About the Speaker

Prof. Christophe Snoeck is a Research Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, and head of the Brussels Bioarchaeology Lab (BB-LAB) which is part of the Archaeology, Environmental Changes and Geo-Chemistry Research Group.

His research integrates archaeology and isotope geochemistry to investigate funerary practices, mobility, and landscape use in past populations. Trained in chemical engineering and archaeological science, he obtained a PhD from the University of Oxford before returning to Belgium. His work also focuses on developing new isotopic proxies for the study of charred and calcined bone at the European scale.

He contributes to the IsoArcH database (www.isoarch.org) and supports the creation of European maps of biologically available strontium based on modern plant samples.
