Κώστας Στεφανής (1928 - 2016)

Ο Κώστας Στεφανής σπούδασε στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Aθηνών, μετεκπαιδεύτηκε στο Πανεπιστήμιο McGill στο Mόντρεαλ του Kαναδά και στο Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ψυχικής Yγείας των H.Π.A. Διετέλεσε διευθυντής του Τομέα Κοινωνικής Ιατρικής, Ψυχιατρικής και Νευρολογίας και ιδρυτικός διευθυντής του Ερευνητικού Πανεπιστημιακού Ινστιτούτου Ψυχικής Υγιεινής του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών καθώς και του Συνεργατικού Κέντρου του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού Υγείας για την Έρευνα και την Εκπαίδευση στην Ψυχική Υγεία.

Διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Ψυχιατρικής και Νευρολογικής Εταιρίας, μέλος του Δ.Σ. του Εθνικού Ιδρύματος Ερευνών και ισόβιο μέλος (τιμής ένεκεν) του Συμβουλίου του. Διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος της Παγκόσμιας Ψυχιατρικής Εταιρίας, μέλος και Πρόεδρος επιτροπών του Παγκόσμιου Οργανισμού Υγείας και άλλων διεθνών επιστημονικών οργανισμών. Το 1994 εξελέγη τακτικό μέλος της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, της οποίας διετέλεσε και Πρόεδρος.

Το 1996 εξελέγη βουλευτής Επικρατείας της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας και από το 2002 έως το 2004 διετέλεσε Υπουργός Υγείας στην κυβέρνηση Κώστα Σημίτη.

Ο Κώστας Στεφανής διαδραμάτισε καθοριστικό ρόλο στο σχεδιασμό και ίδρυση του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου και υπήρξε μέλος του πρώτου Συμβουλίου Επιτρόπων του Ερευνητικού και Εκπαιδευτικού Ιδρύματος Κύπρου (2005-2013). Συνεισέφερε σημαντικά στη διαμόρφωση του οράματος που διαπνέει το Ινστιτούτο και στήριξε το Ίδρυμα από την αρχή της λειτουργίας του.

Costas Stefanis (1928 - 2016)

Costas Stephanis studied at the University of Athens Medical School where he acquired the specialty of Neurology-Psychiatry. He conducted post-doctoral research at McGill University of Montreal, Canada, and at the National Institute of Psychiatric Health in the U.S.A. He served as director of the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Athens, the department of Social Medicine, Psychiatry and Neurology, the Athens University Psychiatric Health Research Institute, as well as the Cooperative Centre of the World Health Organization for Research and Education in Psychiatric Health.

He also served as President of the Hellenic Psychiatry and Neurology Society, and was a lifelong member of its Council. He was President of the World Psychiatry Society and member and president of numerous committees of the World Health Organization and international Scientific Societies. In 1994 he was elected member of the Athens Academy, in which he also served as President.

In 1996 he was elected member of the Greek Parliament and served as Minister of Health from 2002 to 2004 in the administration of Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

Costas Stefanis played a defining role in the establishment of The Cyprus Institute initially as a member of the planning team, and subsequently as a member of the first Board of Trustees of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (2005-2013), and as member emeritus thereafter. He contributed greatly to shaping the vision and mission of the Institute and with his scientific approach, academic and political contacts supported The Cyprus Institute from the beginning of its operations.
