MICROFIBRES - Advanced Mathematical Modelling and Simulations of Microplastic Fibre Degradation
The MICROFIBRES project aims to investigate the diffusion-dissolution dynamics of microplastic fibres in various environmental settings, employing a novel bottom-up approach to provide essential data for large-scale studies and enhance microplastics research. This pioneering effort will develop a comprehensive mathematical and computational modelling framework to quantify the behaviour of microplastic fibres in aquatic systems, soil/sediment conditions, and within organisms. The framework will integrate input from microcosm experiments simulating real-world environmental conditions, such as UV intensity, acidity, and microbial growth.
MICROFIBRES aims to advance the field of microplastics research by providing a detailed, quantifiable understanding of microplastic fibre dynamics that will enable better prediction and management of microplastic pollution, benefiting ecosystems and human health. The project’s outcomes will serve as critical tools for researchers and policymakers dedicated to monitoring and mitigating the adverse effects of microplastics in the environment.
