BIOLEA - Sustainable Bio-Based Leather Alternative for Fashion and Interior Applications

Picture1

The BIOLEA project aims to create a scalable, sustainable, bio-based leather alternative from prickly pear (Opuntia) cactus trimmings, which positions it as an eco-friendly solution in the alternative leather market. Led by NEEMA Labs in collaboration with the University of Cyprus, the Open University, Costas Theodorou Ltd., and the Cyprus Institute, BIOLEA focuses on advancing a prototype from validation to a market-ready product. The project objectives include: (1) developing a renewable, 100% bio-based leather alternative, aligning with the principles of circular economy; (2) ensuring the durability and aesthetic quality needed for sectors like fashion, upholstery, and automotive; (3) increasing international competitiveness; and (4) facilitating knowledge transfer and industry collaboration.

Aligned with Cyprus’ Smart Specialization Strategy, BIOLEA supports eco-friendly materials and waste reduction in production. The project tackles the environmental impacts of leather production and traditional synthetic alternatives, aiming to deliver a durable, cost-effective, biodegradable material. Through biomimetic design and enzymecatalyzed crosslinking, the prototype offers an alternative to animal leather, promoting a circular economy approach to the textile industry, which has become a significant source of carbon emissions, particularly if left on a business-as-usual trajectory.
