Time-gated luminescence spectroscopy (TGLS) monitors electronic processes and excited state dynamics. As a highly sensitive tool, it empowers the study of a diverse materials portfolio, and it serves industry in quality control. To use TGLS for addressing open questions at the forefront of the research scene is a self-evident requirement. In Cyprus however, a TGLS infrastructure for the ns-ms time scale is missing. ASPERIUM aims to fill in the gap and to provide TGLS access to the Research & Innovation (R&I) community for removing restrictions and bottlenecks.

A research infrastructure will be established for broadband TGLS measurements supported by smart machine-learning algorithms. In tandem with device engineering activities, the ASPERIUM knowledge will transcend into innovative wearable devices. Synergies between two prestigious academic organizations and an innovative Cypriot SME will expedite research on critical components (metalorganic, small molecular, polymeric) and accelerate their use in OPV, solar fuel and biomedical monitoring technologies. Curiosity-driven and industrial research will harmonically blend to exploit the photophysical process of photon energy up-conversion and to enable the fabrication of a smart wearable sensor for monitoring blood pressure. The powerful character of TGLS will be demonstrated by monitoring the dynamics of emissive non-geminate charge recombination in organic photovoltaic (OPV) layers; a process that gauges OPV device performance.

The project will create jobs and benefit the local community. The engagement of R&I Cypriot and foreign stakeholders guarantees the expansive use of the infrastructure in the local Research and Industry sectors. ASPERIUM holds the potential to pursue European funding for Excellence in advanced materials for Sustainable Light Management. As such, it is in accord with the Sustainable Development Goal 7 of the United Nations (2030 Agenda) that aims to access human societies to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy.
