PhD positions in Quantum Computing

Open call for the academic year 2024/2025

The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of The Cyprus Institute, invites applications for PhD positions to perform research in the area of quantum computing. The doctoral research will be carried out at The Cyprus Institute in Cyprus with secondments at the Center for Quantum Technology and Applications (CQTA) at DESY, Germany. The research program is supported by the European Commission under the newly funded ERA Chair “QUEST” (HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-TALENTS-01 under grant agreement No. 101087126),

Quantum Computing has seen significant progress over the last 20 years in the development of quantum devices which offer a fundamentally new way of computing compared to classical computers. Recent achievements in quantum computing led to the beginning of the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era, where quantum computers with moderate error rates can outperform classical computers for specific applications. QUEST aims to apply quantum computing for models in high energy and condensed matter physics but also in areas of classical optimization and quantum machine learning.

The Graduate School

The Graduate School was established in 2010 and is the educational arm of The Cyprus Institute. It is a fully accredited, degree-granting institution of higher education offering exclusively postgraduate programs. It maintains a small number of students that are fully integrated into the research activities of the institute. This provides the students with the opportunity to acquire hands-on training in the use of the latest methods and techniques, have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and conduct research with internationally recognized research teams.

The successful applicant will be based at the Graduate School of The Cyprus Institute and at the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC). The selected person will be enrolled in the PhD program: Computational Sciences.

Required Qualifications

Successful applicants should have (or be about to earn) a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or a related field. English language proficiency is also required (see details in the How to Apply Section below for details on application requirements).

Financial Support

The successful candidate will be employed as a Graduate Research Fellow or receive a stipend in accordance with the current regulations at the Graduate School of The Cyprus Institute. We offer competitive financial support with the exact stipend level to be confirmed upon appointment.

The exact salary/stipend level will be confirmed upon appointment.

Additional Information

The position will be for 3 years and is open to candidates of any nationality. The candidate must be willing to register and undertake a PhD in The Cyprus Institute starting as early as possible. Successful candidates will perform their research under the supervision of the ERA Chair Holder, Prof. Karl Jansen, and the PI of the project, Prof. Constantia Alexandrou.
