ANNOUNCEMENT
The Cyprus Institute is pleased to announce the 5th ChArMEx international workshop to be held in Larnaca (Palm Beach Hotel from 17-21 October 2016). This workshop is jointly organized by the EU-FP7 BACCHUS and EU-H2020 ACTRIS2 projects and is being held under the auspices of the Future Earth MENA Regional Center and with participation of iLEAPS, a Future Earth core project.
The workshop will focus on atmospheric processes and their impacts on climate, air quality and human health in the Mediterranean, a region characterized by a wide a variety of gaseous and particulate emission sources. The Mediterranean is an ideal real-world laboratory for atmospheric processes studies, especially related to human health and climate change, since it is a climatically sensitive region getting rapidly warmer and dryer while it holds some of the world most populated megacities. The high aerosol load in the Mediterranean is associated to its proximity to the Earth’s largest dust source areas (i.e. the Saharan, Middle-East and Arabian deserts) but it is also associated with its unique location at the crossroads of transported aerosols emitted from Europe, African and the Middle East.
During the workshop a number of the previously raised scientific issues will be addressed with a focus on results from past campaigns performed in the frame of ChArMEx-BACCHUS-ACTRIS projects. Finally this workshop will offer a unique opportunity to discuss and exchange on future joint field campaigns and large scale experiments within the Mediterranean region.
The workshop will also host ChArMEx related networking programs funded by ENVI-MED and focusing on megacities pollutant emission inventories (TRANSMED), the transfer of atmospheric contaminants to the seawater (TRANCOMED2), and air quality and climate health impact assessment (ARCHIMEDES).
As such the workshop is open to scientists and students interested in atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, climate-chemistry interactions and heath impact assessment in the Mediterranean region.
Oral communications from participants are welcome, and a poster Session will also be included in the programme. The workshop is also opened to targeted splinter meetings.
