The Cyprus Institute hosts IAEA International Workshop on Low-Carbon Pathways Featured

On 9-11 December The Cyprus Institute hosted representatives from 15 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Asia, in the last meeting of the project “Analyzing Low Carbon Pathways towards an Ambitious Decarbonized Energy Sector by 2050” organized and funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Local organizers were Constantinos Taliotis and Theodoros Zachariadis.
The project aimed at assisting IAEA Member States in achieving the Paris Agreement climate stabilization targets and aiding them in the preparation of their National Energy and Climate Plans and Nationally Determined Contributions.
The workshop highlighted the need for expanded regional collaboration, stronger cross-border data harmonization, enhanced capacity-building programs, and long-term institutional frameworks for maintaining modelling expertise. Member States committed to advancing analytical capabilities for evidence-based, sustainable, and secure energy planning. Participants also identified shared challenges – particularly data gaps, staff turnover, limited modelling capacity, and the complexity of modelling small or rapidly evolving power systems.
Several professionals from Cyprus, including Cyprus Institute PhD students, benefited from training and capacity-building events that were carried in the last six years in the frame of this project.
CyI organizers are grateful to the IAEA staff for their support.
