Work Package 1 - Smart Urban Isle Concept and Scenarios
The purpose of this WP is to analyze the different domains in relation to SUI concepts and strategies and how can these domains co-work among them; optimal scope of the SUI, renewable energies involved and how they are going to interact with all SUI components and set the bases for the collaboration between the fields of knowledge.

Work Package 2 - Smart Urban Isle Concept and Scenarios
The objectives of WP2 are:

  • Determining the energy consumption and human comfort conditions within the new/existing building by acquiring data.
  • Enhancing of the energy performance by reducing the conventional energy use with energy efficient design, energy conservation measures and reducing the CO2 emissions.
  • Working simultaneously with WP4 to redesign solutions for public buildings and their surroundings where the total energy demand is minimized.
  • Determining the optimal amount of surrounding buildings that are necessary for a zero energy demand of the combination of the public building with the surrounding buildings (design point of view).

Work Package 3 - Smart Urban Isle Management System
The objectives are:

  • Developing a software application to control, manage and monitor a public facility in order to enhance both energy efficiency and energy flow throughout the Smart Urban Isle.
  • Interpreting static and real time data from different sensors and infrastructure.
  • Creating an intelligent HUB, which can connect other platforms and in same time will be possible to be connected into a bigger infrastructure.
  • Creating a powerful set of guidelines and best practices for creating 3rd party application using scalable web services (API methods); include smartphones (mobile devices) in the platform for collecting data (receptors) and in the same time to be ways for delivering information and alerts.
  • Creating an intuitive interface enabling city users to get real time insights, analyse long term patterns and take effective actions. The final concept of the platform will encourage an innovation global ecosystem, where data will be smart interpreted and shared with other city HUBs.

Work Package 4 - Smart Urban Isle mini-networks
Urban Isle mini-networks will cope with how we facilitate the generation, storage and supply of energy in the SUI. This means the aim of WP 4 is to develop concepts for flexible and smart networks that integrate the energy demands, storage and renewable energy production, both from buildings as well as from shared energy facilities in the SUI. Energy production includes all renewable sources but has a focus on solar and wind energy. The work package investigated the optimal scale of certain energy technologies, such as shared production and storage facilities, and therefore increases the synergy and flexibility of energy networks. A second aim is to match the quality of energy, i.e. the exergy, and hence to reduce exergy losses in the energy networks of the SUI, resulting in an effective use of the potential of energy resources.

Work Package 5 - Implementation & Validation
The objective of the implementation work package 5 is to study and analyse the technical and economic feasibility of transforming urban areas into SUI’s, according to the measures and recommendations developed in the work packages 1 until 4. The implementation will specifically be analysed for six municipalities: Amsterdam, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Iasi, Limassol, Granada and Güssing through ecoEnergyLand. A roadmap for implementation will be developed and if feasible within the project budget and timeframe, real measures will be implemented.

Work Package 6 - Dissemination & Exploitation
The overall objective of this WP is to define and develop activities to disseminate information and exploit innovation results as well as carry out communication activities that will be an important and integral part of the project. For the dissemination of the SUI project, aspects as creation of a project identity (logo, templates), creation and maintenance of the project website as well as newsletters and stakeholder identification are some of the focus. Also, an interactive information exchange with the no-technical community will be strongly considered in order to create science curiosity and involvement. In what exploitation concerns, a business model will be defined and evaluated in order to optimize the impact of the results of the project, taking into account all the actors involved in the different disciplines covered in the SUI project.

Work Package 7 - Project management & coordination
The Management & Coordination WP will last for the whole duration of the project. The objective of Project Management is to coordinate the project work towards the achievement of the objectives within the proposed scope and financial resources based on smooth co-operation between the SUI partners. To perform overall project government and to establish and maintain a communication and controlling infrastructure.
