The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance at The Cyprus Institute

inFocus MinisterlabourThe Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mrs. Zeta Emilianidou visited The Cyprus Institute’s premises in Athalassa Campus on Tuesday, 11th February. Mrs. Emilianidou was accompanied by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Andreas Assiotis.

During the meeting CyI President, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas presented the Institute’s overall vision and achievements and briefed the delegation about the progress on its strategic development plan. Particular emphasis was given to the significant achievements in the areas of preservation of Cultural Heritage, Climate Change Research and Computational Science. These scientific areas highlight the regional nature of the Institute and establish it as a leading research institution in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The delegation visited a number of laboratories of the Institute where CyI staff presented some of its main research activities. The Minister had the opportunity to talk with young researchers currently working at the Institute through the government scheme for training unemployed young people. CyI employs seven young scientists in various fields.

Emphasis was given to the Institute’s contribution in research and innovation, which as the Minister said, is the way for young scientists to be employed in areas that will aid Cyprus’ development. Mrs. Emilianidou congratulated CyI for offering this opportunity to young scientists.

The Minister stressed that The Cyprus Institute is an important research and education center and should be supported by all stakeholders and added that CyI should continue to carry out its important scientific activities and to further strengthen its efforts to promote research and innovation in Cyprus.
