Movement of Social Democrats - EDEK visits CyI

A delegation from the Movement of Social Democrats – EDEK, led by its President and President of the House of Representatives Mr. Yiannakis Omirou, visited The Cyprus Institute on the 19th of June. Mr. Omirou was accompanied by the party’s Members of Parliament Mr. Nicos Nicolaides and Mrs Roula Mavronicola and Deputy President of the Movement Mr. Marinos Sizopoulos.

During the meeting the President of The Cyprus Institute, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas briefed the delegation on the progress and development of the Institute, its scientific achievements and the challenges the Institute is facing. Prof. Papanicolas also answered questions from the delegation regarding the scientific work carried out at the Institute, its research projects and future planning.

The Representatives from EDEK demonstrated particular interest in the Institute’s research projects on Climate Change, Solar Energy and Desalination, Computational Science and preservation of Cultural Heritage. The delegation was also toured at CyI’s laboratories and facilities, where the scientific staff presented some of the Institute’s flagship research activities.

Following the meeting, Mr. Οmirou expressed EDEK’s support to The Cyprus Institute. He specifically stated that the Institute is a center of scientific excellence both locally and internationally. The visit, he said, aimed to see first-hand the exceptional scientific work that is being carried out and added that CyI is comparable with leading international institutions. Mr. Omirou concluded by saying that our country is going through hard times and it is therefore necessary to reform our economy by supporting research and innovation.
