EC's VP V. Dombrovskis: CyI an Example of Successful Utilisation of European Funds

The Vice President for Euro and Social Dialogue of the European Commission, Mr Valdis Dombrovskis, visited The Cyprus Institute on Saturday, 5th March 2016. Mr Dombrovskis was accompanied by members of his cabinet, Mr. George Markopouliotis - Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus and Mr. George Georghiou, Permanent Secretary of the Directorate for European Programs, Coordination and Development and Trustee of the CyI. The meeting was also attended by CyI Trustees Ms Androulla Vassiliou, Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, Mr. Sotirios Zackheos and Dr Petros Kareklas.

Vice President Dombrovskis was briefed about the vision, accomplishments and pioneering research carried out at the Institute by Prof. Costas Papanicolas, President of The Cyprus Institute. Mr. Dombrovskis recognized CyI as an important pilar in the efforts of Cyprus to transform its economy into a knowledge economy. He was impressed by the success of CyI to secure such a large number of competitive EU projects and stated that CyI is an example for the successful investement and utilization of EU funds.

The delegation visited three of CyI’s research infrastructures: the Unmanned Aircraft Research Facility, the Visualization Laboratory and the Cy-Tera Supercomputer. Mr. Dombrovskis discussed the latest developments in each field with researchers and students of the laboratories, praising the scientific work conducted at CyI. He highlighted that CyI can act as a gateway for research and technology between EU, the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East countries, for the welfare and prosperity of the region.
