Doctoral Programs at CyI

The Cyprus Institute offers three full-time doctoral programs of study in:

  1. Computational Sciences
  2. Science and Technology in Cultural Heritage
  3. Energy, Environment and Atmospheric Sciences

The Cyprus Institute has also established agreements for dual doctoral degrees with a number of world-class institutions, which are detailed below:

  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)
  • Lund University (LU)
  • Wuppertal University (BUW)
  • Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aaachen (RWTH)
  • University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (UTOV)

The programs are of three-year duration, organized in six semesters and the language of instruction is English. CyI is fully authorized to award doctoral degrees by the Republic of Cyprus and its three programs are formally registered with the Ministry of Education and Culture. The doctoral programs have been accredited by the Council of Educational Evaluation-Accreditation (CEEA/SEKAP). The programs adhere to the Bologna Process third cycle degrees and international PhD standard practices and are fully accredited both on an EU and on International level. As a sign of recognition, CyI was chosen to coordinate a consortium of 17 European academic and industrial institutions to implement a European Joint Doctorate (EJD) programme in computational sciences entitled ‘High Performance Computing in Life sciences, Engineering and Physics (HPC-LEAP)”. The program is under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of Horizon2020 and it is among 9 such programs that are being funded across Europe within this first call. As such, it is a great success for Cyprus to be the coordinating country and it clearly demonstrates the attractiveness that an innovative PhD program can have on a European level.

The doctoral programs of the Institute are highly exclusive: intensive, rigorous and very demanding. They are intended for those eager to shape and drive the international knowledge economy of tomorrow, those who share our vision that future peace and prosperity is founded on social justice and enabled by science and technology. A very limited number of applicants can expect to be admitted, those that are equipped for such a challenge and especially those that have also the drive to excel internationally in the fields of study offered.

Prospective students who have questions about admission requirements, or require assistance with the application process are welcome to visit the Institute or to contact the Office of Graduate Studies. Online application information and forms are available on the Education page of the Institute’s web site at http://www.cyi.ac.cy/education.

EAS Programs

Energy systems play a defining and critical role in the anthropogenic influence and forgings on the planetary system, and as such have a direct impact on our environment and ecosystem. The objective of the program is to train at the highest level future engineers and scientist on renewable energy generation power systems and their technological developmental pathways. Apart from technologies for renewable energy production, focus is also given on energy consumption in buildings, which require large amounts of resources during both their construction and operation. All these topics are addressed by a number of courses on Renewable Energy, with a particular focus on Solar Energy, as well Energy Demands and Novel Solutions for the Built Environment, in combination with the ongoing research programs of the CyI.
