S. Metzger received a PhD from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at Utrecht University (2000), became Assistant Professor at the University of Oldenburg (Germany), Department of Theoretical Physics and Complex Systems and joined 2002 the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC), Department of Atmospheric Chemistry, in Mainz (Germany). In 2008 he received the »Fraunhofer Attract Award« to lead the working group "Fuel cell development" at the Energy Technology Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), Freiburg (Germany), while he joined in 2012 The Cyprus Institute (CyI) in Nicosia as Adjunct Associate Professor (position held up-to date).
Research interests are on hygroscopic growth of airborne particles (aerosols), associated multiphase aerosol chemistry, the important aerosol-haze-fog-cloud-radiation interactions (visibility), air pollution and climate-change feedbacks due to water uptake, light dimming, the development of computationally efficient thermodynamical codes that enable an unique analytical computation of the water activity based on cation-anion composition and the consideration of the crucial aerosol water uptake in numerical forecast models. Another topic is the chemical storage of solar energy by using reversible fuel cells.
